Characterization of atmospheric precipitation effects on spaceborne synthetic aperture radar response at X, Ku, Ka band

چکیده
Space-borne X-band synthetic aperture radars (SARs) provide a unique opportunity to measure rainfall over land with unsurpassed spatial resolution of about few hundred meters. This work explores the potential of space-borne X-SARs to estimate rainfall over land from both a model and retrieval point of view. The main objective is to provide a framework for a physically-based inversion of SARs measurements at X (9.6 GHz), Ku (14 GHz) and Ka (30 GHz) band over land. A forward model of SAR response will be illustrated for X, Ku and Ka bands. We will present an inversion methodology, a quantitative application to XSAR data of the SIR-C mission in 1994, and a qualitative application to TerraSAR-X data over France, 2008.

Rain retrieval over land from X-band spaceborne synthetic aperture radar: a model study
Numerous studies conducted as part of the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) program have demonstrated the benefits of space-borne precipitation measurements. The NASA Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) is an outgrowth of TRMM that will provide improved precipitation measurements and extend those measurements to higher latitudes. GPM satellite will carry a microwave imager coupled wit...

A new dual-frequency (Ku and Ka band) nadir-pointing Doppler radar on the high-altitude NASA ER-2 aircraft, called the High-Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP), has collected data over severe thunderstorms in Oklahoma and Kansas during the Midlatitude Continental Convective Clouds Experiment (MC3E). The overarching motivation for this study is to understand the behavior of...
متن کاملPotential of high-resolution detection and retrieval of precipitation fields from X-band spaceborne synthetic aperture radar over land
X-band Synthetic Aperture Radars (X-SARs), able to image the Earth’s surface at metric resolution, may provide a unique opportunity to measure rainfall over land with spatial resolution of about few hundred meters, due to the atmospheric moving-target degradation effects. This capability has become very appealing due to the recent launch of several X-SAR satellites, even though several remote s...
متن کاملSimulation of Space-borne Radar Observations of Precipitation at Ku and Ka Band
Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is poised to be the next generation precipitation observations from space after the TRMM mission. The GPM will carry a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka band frequencies. Since space-borne precipitation observations have never been done in Ka band before, extensive research work on dualfrequency radar, including electromagnet...

Spaceborne precipitation radars are powerful tools used to acquire adequate and highquality precipitation estimates with high spatial resolution for a variety of applications in hydrological research. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, which deployed the first spaceborne Kaand Ku-dual frequency radar (DPR), was launched in February 2014 as the upgraded successor of the Tropical...
